A Journey of Purpose: The Epic Climb of Kilimanjaro for Leukemia Awareness
Some goals take years to achieve. Others become even more meaningful when they are connected to someone you love. For Kieran Purtill, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a lifelong ambition. After losing his mother, Kathy, to cancer, the journey became a way to honor her memory and raise awareness of blood cancers.
Â
In this episode of *Logistics With Purpose®*, hosts Enrique Alvarez and Kristi Porter speak with Kieran about the physical and mental challenges of reaching Africa’s highest peak, the support that helped him get there, and the cause that gave the climb a deeper meaning.
Â
Kieran had dreamed of climbing Kilimanjaro for nearly a decade, with the goal of completing it before turning 30. His family always encouraged his love of adventure, even though they did not share the same passion for hiking. Their support gave him the confidence to pursue an ambitious goal without fear of judgment or failure.
Â
After his mother’s health declined and she passed away in February, Kieran decided to connect the climb to something bigger than himself. He turned the expedition into a fundraising and awareness initiative for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in Kathy’s honor. What began as a personal challenge grew into a cause that brought together family, friends, sponsors, and the Vector Global Logistics community.
Â
The climb itself tested Kieran mentally as much as physically. He describes the importance of accepting challenges as they come, maintaining a positive mindset, and putting one foot in front of the other. His advice is simple: time will pass anyway, so do not let fear stop you from getting started.
Â
The conversation also explores the logistics behind a successful expedition. Traveling from Atlanta to Tanzania involved long-haul flights and a lengthy layover, followed by a demanding climb. Kieran highlights the role of his guides and the support team at Altezza Travel, along with the sponsors and colleagues who helped him prepare and stay motivated.
Â
Beyond the summit, the experience gave Kieran a deeper understanding of blood cancer awareness. He discusses the staggering frequency of diagnoses and how volunteering with Blood Cancer United has helped him find ways to support others navigating similar experiences. While he cannot provide all the answers, he believes that showing up, offering support, and helping raise awareness can make a difference.
Â
This conversation is a reminder that personal milestones can become powerful opportunities to help others. Kieran’s journey demonstrates how perseverance, a strong support system, and a meaningful cause can turn an ambitious dream into an effort that reaches far beyond the individual.
